In Vienna's Musikverein, Leonard Bernstein and the Vienna Philharmonic celebrates Ludwig Van Beethoven's 200th birthday with a joyful performance of his Piano Concerto No. 1 in C Major. Maestro Bernstein conducts the orchestra from the keyboard in this historic concert.

After Evgeny Mravinsky, Yuri Temirkanov is one of the main representatives of Russian music. He is the current principal conductor of the Mariinsky's Orchestra and conducted St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra during twelve years. During the Verbier Festival 2011 he performed with the great Yuja Wang in a programme including Liadov, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky.

As part of ‘Europiano’, ARTE’s day dedicated to piano concertos, Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor – one of the most important works of German Romanticism – comes to life under the fingers of the great Martha Argerich. Her performance stands out not only for its virtuosity, but also for its expressive intensity, enriched by an almost chamber-music-like rapport between the piano and the orchestra.

A music miniseries, filmed largely on location in Vienna and Germany, not only featuring Bernstein but also, noted actor Maximilian Schell, who not only provided commentary on Beethoven, but read from his letters.The miniseries contains performances of all of Beethoven's symphonies as well as several overtures, a string quartet that Bernstein re-orchestrated for the entire string section of the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Missa Solemnis, all conducted by Bernstein. It also contains commentary about the music by Leonard Bernstein.
